ACT annually conducts an 8-week summer internship program for outstanding doctoral students interested in careers related to assessment. In 2005, the program will run from June 6 through July 29. The summer internship program provides interns with practical experience through completion of a project, seminars, and direct interaction with professional staff responsible for research and development of testing programs. An additional program objective is to increase representation of women and minority professionals in measurement and related fields. The Division of Cancer Prevention of the National Cancer Institute offers unpaid clinical trials research training internships for outstanding statistics and biostatistics students who have strong interests in both clinical trials and methodological research. Each intern selects a research project from any of the areas of active research interest of the preceptor, and works with this preceptor towards turning the project into a paper that can be published (with the intern as a co-author). In the past, interns have worked on projects dealing with ordered categorical data, methodologies for prostate cancer screening trials, improved methods of randomization, and methods to control selection bias in randomized trials. Other research interests include endpoint selection (including the validation of surrogate endpoints) and nonparametric covariate adjustment. In some cases the intern may be able to suggest a suitable research project to work on. The hours are flexible to allow the intern to also work at a paying job, and interns enjoy the benefits of access to the world-class NIH Library, plus interns are free to attend the lectures presented by cutting edge researchers on and around the NIH Campus.
