Turning to Beethoven

A1	First corners set and turn single. Partners two-hand turn once round.
A2	Second corners set and turn single. Neighbors two-hand turn once round.
B1	All set toward center of group of four, and turn single (right) to face neighbor. Circle left.
B2	Circle right (back to home). Partners half poussette counterclockwise.

Notes

• This dance uses the same music, Contredanse #1 by Beethoven, as my dance I Care not for these Corners, but I think of it as more of an overhaul than a revision of that dance.
• This dance still plays with the common English Country dance introduction in which corners set and turn single, then turn each other. But this version has none of the role-playing of rejecting unwanted advances.
• The result is, I think, an accessible dance for newcomers to English Country dance that contains a twist for dancers familiar with the corner interactions that this dance foils.
• I first called this dance in December 2025, pointing out that the music was Beethoven's and that his birthday was in the coming week. The band played the melody to the "Ode to Joy" section of Beethoven's 9th symphony as a change tune, instantly cementing the Beethoven connection by going from obscure Beethoven to iconic Beethoven.
