Developing a Financial Condition Indicator
System for
With Salwa Ammar of Le Moyne College
and William Duncombe and Bernard Jump of Syracuse
University’s Maxwell School, working to development expert systems to evaluate
the financial health of school districts. System also indicates areas for
improvement.
Expert System to Create
Bond Ratings in Public Finance, Fitch Ratings Inc. 2001-2003.
With Salwa Ammar, developed expert
system to assist in the process of creating bond ratings for publicly financed
US airports. System produces both a rating as well as a report of the rationale
for the rating.
Calculating Heat Content for Natural Gas, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, 1998-present.
With Salwa Ammar, developing procedures for calculating the heat
content of natural gas from factors, which can be easily measured without
combustion.
Evaluation of Performance Surveys, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, 1995-96.
With Salwa Ammar, developed a fuzzy logic rule based system to
evaluate performance survey for the corporate information system division.
Formal model is annually used by Information Technology at NMPC.
Coal Purchasing Model, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, 1980-89.
Developed computer based coal purchasing model
that minimizes purchasing, transportation, production, and inventory costs.
Model is still in regular use by NYSEG for purchasing, fuel cost forecasting,
and capital project evaluation.
Oil Transportation and Inventory Model, Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., 1981.
Developed a linear program model to help
determine optimal transportation methods (barges and trains) for fuel oil while
minimizing inventory costs.
Input/Output Curves for Electric Generating Stations, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, 1981.
Developed procedures and model for calculating
input/output curves.
Boiler Combustion Simulation Model, Otisca Industries, 1985.
Developed computer model that simulated the cost
to produce steam using different fossil fuels in specified boilers.
Sulfur Abatement Model, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, 1985.
Developed computer model that would forecast
system production costs under a range of possible federal and state
legislation. Used by NYSEG to prepare responses to proposed legislation.
Utility Fuel Inventory Model, Electric Power Research Institute and Niagara Mohawk Power Co rporation, 1985-86.
Worked with NMPC and EPRI in final stages of
development of this now widely used inventory model. Credited with making model
both more accurate and more useful. Also worked extensively with NYSEG as they incorporated
UFIM into their purchasing and forecasting procedures.
Inventory of Critical Spare Parts, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, 1989.
Developed a computer model to analyze desired
inventory levels for expensive but seldom used spare parts.
Sulfur Reduction Model, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, 1991.
Developed computer model that was used to select
long term strategy for complying with acid rain legislation.
