When searching any database, you may wish to start with a key word search, but then look for subject headings when they are used. Subject headings will always provide you with a more precise search. In this particular area, most writers use the term "scientific misconduct" but the database creators do not always use this term when indexing.

Academic Search Elite

PubMed or NLM Gateway for medical research and articles relating to medicine. A subset of PubMed dealing more closely with scientific misconduct in the medical field is Bioethics, and is recommended by our Sciences Bibliographer as a starting place for non-scientists. You can also get to the Bioethics subset through PubMed by clicking on Limits, then clicking on the Subsets dropdown box and selecting Bioethics.

Science Direct Clinical Pharmacology (EbscoHost) http://www.lemoyne.edu/library/resources/titles/clinical_pharmacology.htm Recommend the Advanced Search to refine to a particular discipline or topic. No subject headings.

ERIC http://www.lemoyne.edu/library/resources/titles/eric.htm No clear subject heading, but keyword "scientific misconduct" retrieves useful sources, and provides usable subject headings.

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe http://www.lemoyne.edu/library/resources/titles/lexis_nexis_academic_universe.htm Provides full-text articles, transcripts, laws, and news items on all topics. No controlled vocabulary (subject headings) exist in this database, so try a variety of terms and phrases, such as fraud, misconduct, or "scientific misconduct."

Altman, Ellen, and Peter Hernon, eds.  Research misconduct: issues, implications, and strategies.  Greenwich, CT: Ablex, 1997. Bookstacks Q180.55.M67 R49 1997 Outstanding book on the topic, highly recommended both for faculty and for librarians.

Barinaga, Marcia. "UCSF case raises questions about grant idea ownership." Science 277 (Sep. 5, 1997) 1430-1.
Discusses a dispute about grant writing and charges of plagiarism when a grant writer used words similar to another grant proposal he worked on with other collaborators. Cites the ORI definition of plagiarism, which indicates that this case is not plagiarism.

Park, Robert L. Voodoo Science: the road from foolishness to fraud. NY: Oxford University Press, 2000. A rather scathing report on public and media reactions to false scientific claims. Highly recommended.

The False Claims Act "imposes civil liability on any person or entity who submits a false or fraudulent claim for payment to the US government," and allows individuals to file suit on behalf of the government.

Office of Research Integrity http://ori.dhhs.gov/ (formerly the Office of Scientific Integrity in NIH), US Dept. of Health and Human Services. "Responsible for protecting the integrity of " programs which provide funding to research institutions both within and outside the federal government. Excellent, useful links. (In June 1999, it was reported that ORI would be conducting an "invisible college" of researchers at different institutions to study misconduct.)

"Research has suggested that scientific misconduct may be partially socialized during the undergraduate years (Keith-Spiegel, Lee, Spiegel and Zinn-Monroe, manuscript in preparation). For example, many undergraduate students believe that they will get better grades on their experimental projects if they can produce statistically "significant" results. Students also allow sympathetic situational factors to excuse unethical scientific practice.
