Conference Update June 21

GrewenHall
The arrangements are almost all in place for our conference this week. Just to let you know, there are 3 single a/c rooms and 11 single non-a/c rooms still available for any late registrants. All registrants should have received several email messages from me with updated information on registration location and other practical details. The photo on the right is the entrance to Grewen Hall where we will be holding most of our sessions as well as the venue for registration.

Conference Update June 14

Just to give you an update on where things stand with the Cheiron conference coming in just 10 days. Having received three new registrants today (6/14), there are 63 people who are registered to attend so far. The majority of registrants are planning to stay in campus housing. Hence, as of this evening, there are only 4 more single A/C rooms, but 12 more single non A/C rooms still available for lodging. I am meeting with the Le Moyne administrative and office teams at 10 am tomorrow to put final touches on arrangements for the conference. Those who are coming will find that right behind the two buildings we are using for presentations (Grewen & Reilly Halls), Le Moyne College has begun its largest set of building projects in almost 50 years. We are completing a new soccer/lacrosse field, installing a new parking and road system, breaking ground on a $20 million addition to the Coyne Science Building and moving our bookstore to a new location on the campus southwest corner in a new building. None of this should directly interfere with what takes place at our gathering (certainly the construction crews won’t be here on that Saturday and Sunday). But, I will be notifying all attendees by the end of the week how/where they need to go on the campus in order to sign in upon arrival.

The weather in Central New York has been utterly gorgeous the last week or so. Temperatures have been in the 70s F (ca. 22-25º C) with pleasant breezes. The grounds look lovely and we have to hope that we enjoy similar conditions at the end of next week. As ever, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me at hevern [at] LeMoyne.edu

    Syracuse Jazz Fest June 25-27

    Syracuse Jazz Fest 2010
During the weekend of our conference, the 2010 edition of the Syracuse Jazz Festival will be underway on the campus of Onondaga Community College (OCC), a short drive away from the Le Moyne campus. Since there are no scheduled activities for Friday night, June 25, Cheironians of a jazz persuasion might want to take advantage of the festival which begins at 5 pm. Here is the link to the 2010 Syracuse Jazz Fest web page. Best of all, ADMISSION IS FREE.

    New Hotel Nearby

A brand new Hampton Inn & Suites opened on Erie Blvd., just about 1/4 mile from the Le Moyne College campus. I had not previously announced this since I was not sure if it would be open in time for the conference. If you wish to consider getting a room here, the online web page for the hotel can be found at this link. I know that at least one other conference attendee has already decided to stay there. [05/03/10 Addition: Note that the hotel has agreed to offer a special conference discount for rooms to our attendees. Instructions on obtaining the discount can be found above and on the “Housing & Hotels” page - VWH]

    Conference Program Posted

At the following links, you can download a preliminary version of the program for the conference. By “preliminary” we mean that there are a few tweaks and minor changes that still need to be made to the schedule. However, it is substantially complete. When a “final” version is agreed upon, we will post that updated schedule here as well.

Conference schedule may be downloaded in
rtf format or in PDF format.

UPDATED: 4/13/10. The “final” version of the conference program is now available online. Go to the
    Program page for the links.

    Wednesday Housing Added

I have been asked whether attendees at the 2010 Cheiron Conference at Le Moyne might be able to begin their stay on the evening of Wednesday, June 23, 2010 rather than the next day. The answer is YES. The College housing office will let us begin to use the dormitory spaces a day earlier.

I am sorry that I had not thought this out as completely as I ought to
have done beforehand. For you who are coming to the States from Europe in the later afternoon, this may make it easier to arrive on Wednesday rather than Thursday. And, it will be an advantage for those whose session may be early on Thursday afternoon.

The ONLINE registration page has been updated to allow you to include
Wednesday in your registration. The print registration form, too, has been updated to reflect this change. Note that breakfast on Thursday morning will be offered gratis to those staying on Wednesday night.

If anyone has already registered and wishes to come a day earlier, please contact me directly at and we'll work it out.

    Online Registration Now Open

Registration online for the Cheiron 2010 conference is now available. Please click on the Registration tab on the left side of this page. The link to the online registration site is noted at the bottom of that page. Please read the directions carefully before you attempt to complete registration. If you have any difficulties, please let me know

Jerry Sullivan tells me that he should be passing on to me the program for the conference in the near future. That will be posted here, too.

    Registration Begins

I have posted a Registration page (see tab in column to the left). It contains all the details necessary to calculate the costs associated with attendance at the conference and housing/eating on campus.

For those who will be paying with a check drawn on a U.S. bank, you can proceed to the bottom of the Registration page, download the Registration form, complete it, and mail the form and your payment directly to me at the address indicated.

For those who do not have access to checks drawn on a U.S. bank, you will have to pay by credit card.

For all credit card payments, we will be using an online vendor to both complete your registration form itself and take your credit card information for the charges. Le Moyne does not have the means by which to process directly credit card payments made in any other way. However, the online site for registering and paying by credit card is not yet completed. When it is, I will post the link on the Registration page. I hope this will be set up by next Monday or Tuesday, March 22 or 23. I am sorry for any inconvenience.

Conference Update for March 2, 2010

I am sorry for the delay in getting the Registration materials posted. Here’s where we stand:

I hope to post the registration information for the conference next week, that is, sometime during March 8 to 12. The delay is due to two factors. First, I am still awaiting final cost charges from the college for the use of the facilities. Without that information, we can’t set a final registration fee. The VP who has charge of this issue unexpectedly lost his mother to cancer about 9 days ago and everything in his office has gotten backlogged. I am still waiting word on facility fees. Secondly, in order to accommodate attendees who need to pay their fees by credit card rather than a US bank check, we need to set up a web-based registration site (Le Moyne itself contracts out this service since the college doesn’t itself accept credit cards directly). The first draft of the site is completed and, after I work a bit more with our college webmaster, it should be ready to go.

For those who are planning on staying in rooms on the campus, you should know that the ceiling price will not exceed $50 per night and may be somewhat lower, particularly for those who wish to share rooms.

If you need to contact me, the link to my email account is at the bottom of this page.

    Air Canada Adds SYR Flights

I just noticed this announcement which may be of interest to Cheiron members from Canada:
    Story

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Soon you'll have a new option to get to Canada from Hancock Airport. Starting May 17th, Air Canada will fly directly from Syracuse to Toronto.

The new service will fly nonstop twice daily.

The City of Syracuse says that the flights will be non-stop and timed for connections with flights overseas.

    Cheiron 2010 Webpage Posted

Welcome to the web page for the 2010 Cheiron conference to be held at Le Moyne College, June 24-28, 2010. This will be the site at which I will be posting information about the conference, accommodations, and all the other details for the meeting. I hope to have the major information about the meeting’s logistical details as well as preliminary registration information by the end of January.
