Ghent is situated in the North-West of Belgium, halfway between Brussels (50 km) and Ostend, the nearest city by the North Sea.

TRAVELLING TO GHENT

Arriving by plain/train

Flying in to Brussels National Airport (called Zaventem airport), there are two direct trains an hour connecting Zaventem Airport to Gent-Sint-Pieters train station (usually 3 minutes - sometimes 2 or 4 minutes - past the hour, and 12 minutes to the hour).

Rail connections from The Netherlands go via Antwerp, from France via Brussels, from Germany and Eastern Europe via Luik (Ličge/Lütich) and Brussels, from overseas via Ostend.

Arriving by car

To the conference hotels

To the Alfa Flanders Hotel (NEW NAME OF THE HOTEL: NH HOTEL) (Koning Albertlaan 121) & Europa Hotel (Gordunakaai 59)

Coming from Brussels or Ostend (highway E 40), you should take the exit Gent/Antwerpen/Kortrijk (n° 15) and follow direction Gent as far as the road junction Gent-Alle Richtingen where you choose Alle Richtingen (All Directions). Follow this direction (a road going down) and preselect the outer left lane in front of the first traffic-lights. Turn left and about 300 mrs. further continue on the ring road (R40) around Ghent. When approaching the second traffic-lights, preselect the outer right lane and continue on the R40 taking a curve to the right. Counting from here, continue as far as the second traffic-lights where you turn left on to the Groot-Brittanniëlaan. Following the Groot-Brittanniëlaan, cross the Koning Albertbrug (King Albert Bridge) over a small canal. After this bridge the street name changes to Koning Albertlaan.
The Alfa Flanders Hotel is situated at Koning Albertlaan 121 on your right hand side.
For the Europa Hotel, turn right on to the Gordunakaai (immediately following the Koning Albertbrug). The hotel is at Gordunakaai 59, on your left hand side.

To the Gravensteen Hotel (Jan Breydelstraat 35), Poortackere Hotel (Oude Houtlei 50-58) & Erasmus Hotel (Poel 25)

Coming from Brussels or Ostend (highway E 40), you should take the exit Gent/Antwerpen/Kortrijk (n° 15) and follow direction Gent as far as the road junction Gent-Alle Richtingen where you choose Alle Richtingen (All Directions). Follow this direction (a road going down) and preselect the outer left lane in front of the first traffic-lights. Turn left and about 300 mrs. further continue on the ring road (R40) around Ghent. When approaching the second traffic-lights, preselect the outer right lane and continue on the R40 taking a curve to the right. Counting from here, continue as far as the third traffic-lights where you turn right. From here, you continue (crossing a bridge over a small canal and following tram rails right ahead) as far as the white traffic sign of the park garage Sint-Michiels (P7) (see white traffic signs of parking route) leading you on to Onderbergen, a street on your left where the park garage Sint-Michiels (P7) as well as the conference center Het Pand are situated. In case no parking space would be available anymore in this park garage, continue and turn left at the end of the street. A little further, a white traffic sign will direct you to the park garage Ramen (P8).
To walk to the Erasmus Hotel from the park garage Sint-Michiels, turn left at the end of the street Onderbergen (by Saint-Michael's church). A little further on your right is the Poel, the street of the Erasmus hotel (at the left side of the street).
To walk to the Poortackere Hotel from the park garage Sint-Michiels, walk back on to Onderbergen (away from Saint-Michael's church) and take the Zwarte Zusterstraat on your right. Arriving at the end of this street, the Poortackere Hotel is quasi in front of you.
To walk to the Gravensteen Hotel from the park garage Sint-Michiels, walk to the end of the street Onderbergen (by Saint-Michael's church). Crossing the street, continue on the Ravensteinstraat, the Korenlei and Jan Breydelstraat (streets in continuation of each other). At the end of the latter, on your left side, you will find the Gravensteen Hotel.

To the Ibis Opera Hotel (Nederkouter 24) & Ibis Cathedral Hotel (Limburgstraat 2)

Coming from Brussels or Ostend (highway E 40), you should take the exit Gent/Antwerpen/Kortrijk (n° 15) and follow direction Gent as far as the road junction Gent-Alle Richtingen where you choose Alle Richtingen (All Directions). Follow this direction (a road going down) and preselect the outer left lane in front of the first traffic-lights. Turn left and about 300 mrs. further continue on the ring road (R40) around Ghent. When approaching the second traffic-lights, preselect the outer right lane and continue on the R40 taking a curve to the right. Continue from here as far as the next traffic-lights where you turn right on to the Kortrijksepoortstraat. Continue on this street (with tram rails on your left side and driving by the Ibis Opera Hotel on your left side) as far as a traffic sign prohibiting you to continue and directing you on to a street on your right taking you to the park garage Kouter (P5) (see white traffic signs of parking route). This is the best place to leave your car for the Ibis Hotels. To walk to the Ibis Cathedral Hotel from this Kouter square, take the street Vogelmarkt on the east side of the square. At the first crossroads, take the street left-diagonally in front of you (Gouvernementstraat). At the end of this street you will find the Ibis Cathedral Hotel on your right side.

Straight to the conference center Het Pand

To Gent Sint-Pieters train station

When approaching the second traffic-lights, preselect the central lanes. From there, traffic signs direct you to Gent Sint-Pieters train station.

TRAVELLING IN GHENT

The easiest way to move around the city is by public transport (tram, bus) or on foot. Considering Ghent's traffic direction system, we advise you not to use you car, especially since all the conference locations are either within walking distance from the hotels either easily reached by tram or bus.

From Gent Sint-Pieters train station to the conference hotels

The tram stop at Gent Sint-Pieters train station is at the right side when facing the front of the station building. You should always take trams going in the direction of the front of the station building.
The bus stops are right in front of the station.

To the Alfa Flanders Hotel (NEW NAME OF THE HOTEL: NH HOTEL) (Koning Albertlaan 121)

Trams 21, 22, 40, 41, 42: 2nd stop (Koning Albertbrug) (the tram drives by the hotel on your left side). After getting off the tram, walk back to the hotel.

To the Europa Hotel (Gordunakaai 59)

Trams 21, 22, 40, 41, 42: 2nd stop (Koning Albertbrug). As you get off the tram, cross the Koning Albertlaan in the direction behind you and walk down the street along the left side of the small canal. After a few minutes you arrive at the hotel on your left side.

Bus 9 (direction Mariakerke Driesdreef): 5th stop (Patijntjesstraat). After getting off the bus, take the 1st street on your right (the small canal then is on your left side). The hotel is a few mrs. further at your right.

To the Poortackere Hotel (Oude Houtlei 50-58)

Trams 21,22: 7th stop (Oude Houtlei). As you get off the tram, cross the street and walk down take the street in front of you (Oude Houtlei) where you'll find the hotel on your left side.

To the Gravensteen Hotel (Jan Breydelstraat 35)

Trams 1, 10, 11: 10th stop (Gravensteen). After getting of the tram, walk down the street Rekelinge (somewhat further the street name changes to Burgstraat) and take the first street on your left. The hotel is immediately on your right side.

To the Ibis Cathedral Hotel (Limburgstraat 2)

Trams 1, 10, 11, 12: 9th stop (Korenmarkt). After getting of the tram, walk along the three towers of Ghent (Saint-Nicolas Church, Belfry and Saint-Bavo Cathedral) keeping them on your left side. A little further the hotel is on your right side.

To the Ibis Opera Hotel (Nederkouter 24)

Trams 1, 10, 11, 12: 6th stop (Savaanstraat). As you get of the tram, the hotel is on the opposite side of the street.

To the Erasmus Hotel (Poel 25)

Trams 1, 10, 11, 12: 9th stop (Korenmarkt). After getting of the tram, cross the bridge (Sint-Michielsbrug) on the south-west side of the Korenmarkt and take the 2nd street on your right. The hotel is a few mrs. down the street on your left side.

From Gent Sint-Pieters train station straight to the conference center Het Pand (Onderbergen 1)

Trams 21,22: 7th stop (Oude Houtlei). After getting off the tram, continue through the Gebroeders Vandeveldestraat and take the 2nd street on your left. The conference center is at the end of this street (Onderbergen) on your right.

From the conference hotels to the conference center Het Pand

From the Alfa Flanders Hotel (NEW NAME OF THE HOTEL: NH HOTEL) (Koning Albertlaan 121)

Continue on the Koning Albertlaan in the direction away from the train station toward the nearest tram stop (Koning Albertbrug) and take trams 21 or 22 (not 40, 41, 42!). The 5th stop from here is the Oude Houtlei, where you get off. After getting off the tram, continue through the Gebroeders Vandeveldestraat and take the 2nd street on your left. The conference center is at the end of this street (Onderbergen) on your right.

From the Europa Hotel (Gordunakaai 59)

Leaving the hotel, turn right and walk along the small canal up to the Koning Albertbrug where you take trams 21 or 22 (not 40, 41, 42!). The 5th stop from here is the Oude Houtlei, where you get of. After getting off the tram, continue through the Gebroeders Vandeveldestraat and take the 2nd street on your left. The conference center is at the end of this street (Onderbergen) on your right.

From the Poortackere Hotel (Oude Houtlei 50-58)

Since the Oude Houtlei is a street parallel to Onderbergen (where the conference center is situated), you can easily walk to Het Pand through one of the two connecting streets, i.e. Zwarte Zusterstraat and Posteernestraat.

From the Gravensteen Hotel (Jan Breydelstraat 35)

The Jan Breydelstraat is within walking distance (and it has to be said, a walk with some magnificent views) of the conference center Het Pand. Continue on the Jan Breydelstraat, the Korenlei and Ravenstein (streets in continuation of each other) as far as the Sint-Michielskerk (Saint Michael's church) on your left side. Walk around the church having it on your left side, to come to Onderbergen, the street of the conference center.

From the Ibis Cathedral Hotel (Limburgstraat 2)

Enjoying the wonderful sights, walk along Ghent's three towers (on your right side) in the direction of the Korenmarkt and cross the Sint-Michielsbrug (Saint Michael's bridge). At the other end of the bridge, walk around the Sint-Michielskerk (Saint Michael's church) having it on your left side, to come to Onderbergen, the street of the conference center.

From the Ibis Opera Hotel (Nederkouter 24)

Take trams 1, 10, 11 or 12 at the tram stop (Savaanstraat) opposite to the hotel. Get off at the 3rd stop from here (Korenmarkt) and on the south-west side of the Korenmarkt, cross the Sint-Michielsbrug (Saint Michael's bridge). At the other end of the bridge, walk around the Sint-Michielskerk (Saint Michael's church) having it on your left side, to come to Onderbergen, the street of the conference center.

You can also walk to the conference center. Leaving the hotel, continue on the Nederkouter on your left side as far as the intersection having the Courts building at the corner on your left side. Turn left and cross the bridge over the small canal. At the end of the second street on your right (Onderbergen) you will find the conference center.

From the Erasmus Hotel (Poel 25)

Leaving the hotel, walk toward the Sint-Michielsstraat/Hoogstraat (on your right side). At the T-crossing, turn left leading you to the Sint-Michielskerk (Saint Michael's church) and walk around the church (having it on your left side) to come to Onderbergen, the street of the conference center.

From the conference center Het Pand to City Hall (Botermarkt 1)

Following the keynote by Hubert J.M. Hermans on Friday 18/10 (16:30-17:30), participants are asked to assemble in the entrance hall from where the SICDS caravan will walk to City Hall.

Leaving the conference center, turn right walking up to the Sint-Michielskerk (Saint Michael's church). Walk around the church, having it on your right side, and cross the Sint-Michielsbrug (Saint Michael's bridge). Walking along the Sint-Niklaaskerk (Saint Nicholas church) on your left side and passing by the Emile Braunplein, turn left just before the Belfry. About 100 mrs. further City Hall is on your left side.

From the conference hotels to Lakenhalle (Cloth Hall) (Sint-Baafsplein 7)

From the Alfa Flanders Hotel (NEW NAME OF THE HOTEL: NH HOTEL) (Koning Albertlaan 121)

Continue on the Koning Albertlaan in the direction away from the train station toward the nearest tram stop (Koning Albertbrug) and take trams 21 or 22 (not 40, 41, 42!). The 7th stop from here is the Vogelmarkt, where you get off. After getting off the tram, walk in the direction of the Kouter, a rectangular square. From there, turn on to the Kouterdreef (departing from the Kouter) in the corner on the north-east side and continue through the Kalandestraat making a left curve leading you to the Mageleinstraat. Having arrived at the end of this street, the Belfry (with Cloth Hall) is at your right hand side.

From the Europa Hotel (Gordunakaai 59)

Leaving the hotel, turn right and walk along the small canal up to the Koning Albertbrug where you take trams 21 or 22 (not 40, 41, 42!). The 7th stop from here is the Vogelmarkt, where you get off. After getting off the tram, walk in the direction of the Kouter, a rectangular square. From there, turn on to the Kouterdreef (departing from the Kouter) in the corner on the north-east side and continue through the Kalandestraat making a left curve leading you to the Mageleinstraat. Having arrived at the end of this street, the Belfry (with Cloth Hall) is at your right hand side.

From the Poortackere Hotel (Oude Houtlei 50-58)

Walk down the Zwarte Zusterstraat, further Jacobijnenstraat, Hoornstraat and Voldersstraat (streets in continuation of each other) as far as a crossing with the Mageleinstraat. Turn left and having arrived at the end of this street, the Belfry (with Cloth Hall) is at your right hand side.

From the Gravensteen Hotel (Jan Breydelstraat 35)

Continue on the Jan Breydelstraat, cross the Grasbrug (bridge) on your left side and immediately turn right on to the Graslei (with the small canal on your right side). Turn left on to the 2nd street (Pakhuisstraat) and walking along the Sint-Niklaaskerk (Saint Nicholas church) on your left side and passing by the Emile Braunplein, you arrive at the Belfry (with Cloth Hall) in front of you.

From the Ibis Cathedral Hotel (Limburgstraat 2)

Leaving the hotel, turn left and walk in the direction of the Korenmarkt. The Belfry (with Cloth Hall) is about 200 mrs. further on your right side.

From the Ibis Opera Hotel (Nederkouter 24)

Take trams 1, 10, 11 or 12 at the tram stop (Savaanstraat) opposite to the hotel. Get off at the 3rd stop from here (Korenmarkt) and walk along the Sint-Niklaaskerk (Saint Nicholas church) on your left side.
