MEDIATED IDENTITY: THE DIALOGICAL SELF IN THE EMERGING DIGITAL AGE

In the contemporary world, the construction of personal identity increasingly takes place within the context of emerging forms of mass communication media. This symposium explores a broad range of such media including cyberspace (weblogs, online discussion groups, online virtual reality groups), television, and wireless cellular phones/short messaging systems. Each presentation examines how the specific medium creates distinctive opportunities for the self to deploy dialogical processes and strategies in the ongoing generation and development of personal identity.
