Chemical Principles Laboratory
Spring 2005

Lab notes will be available throughout the semester as a service and convenience to the students. The notes are a supplement to, not a substitute for, the pre-lab lecture. Furthermore, the notes should be considered "under construction" until the date of the corresponding prelab lecture. (As a practical matter, notes will usually be in "final form" some time during the weekend preceding the corresponding lab.)

Important Notes:

Lab Text: Chemistry 152 Laboratory Manual prepared by Mary Leak Ward

Pre-lab lectures: All students are required to attend Pre-lab lectures, held Mon. 8:30 AM in Grewen Auditorium. If you cannot attend a pre-lab lecture for some legitimate reason, it is your responsibility to inform the lab instructor, ahead of time if possible, and to be thoroughly prepared to perform the lab experiment. If, in the opinion the laboratory instructor, you are not sufficiently prepared, you will not be permitted to do the lab.

Lab due dates: Laboratory pre-lab questions are due at the start of each laboratory period, and post-lab questions and results of each experiment are due at the end of the period, except when specifically stated otherwise.

Lab check out: You must check out of the laboratory at the end of the semester (May 3, 4, or 5). If, for any reason, you must drop the laboratory course you must check out of your assigned locker. Your drop from the course is not complete until you have met this requirement.

Laboratory eye protection: The following is the policy of the Le Moyne College Chemistry Department concerning laboratory eye protection. This policy will be enforced by every Le Moyne College Chemistry Professor and Instructor:

  1. Approved Chemical Splash Goggles shall be worn by students when they or anyone else in the laboratory are at work.
  2. A "Door to Door" policy is in effect. That is, all persons in the laboratory must wear approved eye protection. There are no exceptions for washing glassware, setting up apparatus, just passing through, etc.
  3. Students who will not comply with this policy will be asked to leave the laboratory.
You will be supplied with a pair of chemical splash goggles at the beginning of the semester as part of your laboratory equipment. If your goggles are lost it is your responsibility to replace them.

Lab grade and final exam: Note that the laboratory is a one-credit course with a separate grade from the classroom portion of CHM 152. The Final Examination for the laboratory course will be given at the time specified in the course booklet for courses that meet on Mondays at 8:30, namely Thursday May 12 at 3:00 PM. The grade of the final examination will constitute 20% of the laboratory grade.
