[Psychology Images] PSY 101 Introductory Psychology

Instructor: Vincent W. Hevern, S.J., Ph.D.

I am willing to give up to a total of 15 points (out of the 500 for the course) in extra credit.
Each option below -- a lecture report, a research review, or an experiment -- is worth 5 points. You may do any three (3) of these up to a total of 15 points.

Lecture Report

You may attend either or both of the lectures below. For each lecture, you need to write up a report in 2 to 4 pages (double spaced)  in which you describe (1) a summary of what the speaker had to say (the most important points made) and (2) your reflection/reaction to what was said (particularly if you see any link to psychology). You may gain 5 points of extra credit for each of these lectures. Your report must be turned in by the last class of the semester.

Research Review You should go to the section below which contains articles available for review online and then come back here to use the instructions below about what you have to tell me about each article your reviewed.

You will get 5 points of extra credit for each review you hand in.

You should read the article(s). Then, for each article, answer the questions below, keeping your total response for each article to no more than two typed pages (standard print size and margins).

Answer the following questions for each article reviewed. At the top of your paper include the citation using APA format (see list of articles for examples), your name, section number or time of class, the date and my name. Remember that these must be turned in word processed - please use spell check.

On a practical note, these are articles from professional journals. There may be some terms or statistical information that is new and difficult to understand. Although you can look up terms, it is recognized that some results of some studies may be best understood (for the purposes of this course) by focusing on the discussion section.

1. Why did the author(s) do the research?
  
2. Describe the research hypothesis(es).
  
3. Describe what they found and if they supported their research hypotheses.
  
4. Describe the conclusions of the authors, what are the implications of their work.
  
5. What do you think of the research (would you do it the same? differently [how]? was it ethical? worthwhile?).

The review(s) should be turned in to me by the last class of the semester.

  Experiments
Dr. Batcho: Study of Nostalgia & Childhood

In the study, "Nostalgia and Childhood," participants will complete surveys in a session taking 15 to 30 minutes.  Data collection begins Monday, Nov. 16, in RH 112, and students may drop in anytime during a session.  The ad and session dates and times will be posted throughout the semester on the large bulletin board near RH 112.  Next week the sessions are planned as follows:
