COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to provide you with a better comprehension of French history and culture from prehistoric times to the Fifth Republic. For each period, we will be discussing the historic events which happened, the people who influenced these events and the changes which occured in society and the arts. You will understand better the modern French person's mentality and perceive some of the contributions French civilization brought to the Western world.
The course is conducted in French. French majors are expected to speak and write in French; other students may use English. The course consists of discussions based on the assigned pages in the book, lectures by the teacher and slides and music when appropriate. Students are expected to participate orally when the material is presented in the book.
Students may do an oral presentation on a topic of their choice that is relevant to the course. A very good oral presentation may help to raise a final grade in some situations.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Classwork
Students have to come to class well prepared. They should read the assigned passages in the book and learn the content. Any absence will lower the weekly grade given for oral participation and performance (absences due to illness and/or emergency may be excused with appropriate documentation).

Absences
Attendance in class is required. A maximum of 5 absences is allowed before the final grade is lowered. Absences due to illness and/or emergency may be excused with appropriate documentation.

Exams
Three one-hour exams will be held during the semester. There are no make-ups. If sick, (appropriate documentation is needed), students should call me the same day the exam is given so that an exam is rescheduled for them.
There will be plus and minus grades. For example, B+ will correspond to 87 to 90, B to 83 to 87, and B- to 80 to 83.
The final examination will be held during exam week and will last two hours.

Final grade
The final grade is made up as follows:
Exams 60 %
Oral participation 15 %
Final exam 25 %
A good oral presentation may help to raise a final grade in some situations.
